Therapeutic Modalities

In addition to therapeutic exercise, manual therapy and other common treatment methods, our physical therapists use a variety of modalities to reduce pain, facilitate healing and restore function.  Here are several physical therapy modalities that you may receive during treatment.

Electrical Stimulation - TENS

Electrical stimulation, or E-stim, therapeutic treatment that applies electrical stimulation in treating muscle spasms and pain. It can help decrease pain, increase circulation, and decrease edema. It is also helpful in keeping muscles active preventing atrophy and building strength in patients with injuries.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a deep heating modality that is most effective in heating tissues of deep joints. It provides deep heating to soft tissues in the body including muscles, tendons, joints, and ligaments. It can help to decrease pain, increase tissue elasticity, degrade scar, increase cellular activity, and increases circulation. Ultrasound has been approved by the FDA for a wide variety of therapeutic uses.

Heat & Moist Heat

Superficial heat is most often used during the acute phases of treatment when the reduction of pain and inflammation are the primary goals.

Cold & Cryotherapy

Unlike heat, cold or cryotherapy is used to reduce blood flow and inflammation during the acute phase of healing. It can also reduce or temporarily prevent swelling in an injured joint or muscle following exercise, making it a useful post-exercise modality.
